How to get from Bangkok to Koh Samui

Direct flight, budget fly-and-ferry via Surat Thani, or the classic overnight train + ferry — honest 2025 timings, joined-ticket prices, and the transfer buffers that decide whether you sleep on the island or at a pier hotel.

3–16 h
total time
฿1,000–฿6,500
per person
USM
on-island airport

The short answer

Fly direct to USM if time matters and the fare is under ~4,500 THB. For the budget play, fly low-cost to Surat Thani (URT) and connect to a Seatran/Raja ferry from Donsak — often half the price, but tighter. The sleeper train is romantic but the slowest by a wide margin.

Three ways to get there

Direct flight (BKK → USM)

Short trips, families, anyone with luggage

Time
≈ 3–4 h door-to-door
Price
2,500–6,500 THB
Buffer
On-island airport, 10 min to most resorts

Why pick it

  • Bangkok Airways flies hourly BKK → Samui — quickest by far
  • Samui airport (USM) is on the island; resort transfers are 10–30 min
  • No ferry leg — your bags arrive when you do

Watch out for

  • Bangkok Airways holds a near-monopoly — fares stay high vs Surat Thani
  • Last flight back to BKK is ~21:00; book a buffer night for early returns

Fly to Surat Thani + bus/ferry combo

Budget-conscious travelers, flexible schedules

Time
≈ 5–7 h total
Price
1,200–2,500 THB
Buffer
Tight — bus meets specific ferries

Why pick it

  • Low-cost flights (AirAsia, Nok, Lion) to Surat Thani (URT) from 800 THB
  • Joined van + Raja or Seatran ferry combo runs about 400–600 THB from URT
  • Total often half the price of a direct Samui flight

Watch out for

  • Multiple legs — flight delay can mean missing the last ferry from Donsak
  • Donsak pier transfer is the tightest part — pad with a flight that lands by 14:00

Sleeper train + ferry via Surat Thani

Slow travelers, train enthusiasts

Time
≈ 14–16 h
Price
1,000–1,800 THB joined
Buffer
Wide — train arrives morning, ferries run all day

Why pick it

  • Overnight train from Krung Thep Aphiwat, arrives Surat Thani ~06:00
  • Joined train + bus + ferry tickets sold at the station
  • Wide transfer buffer — multiple ferry options after arrival

Watch out for

  • Longest option by far — book a hotel night on arrival day
  • 2nd-class lower bunks sell out in high season; upper bunks are tight
